Kobie Dozier

Meet Kobie Dozier.  Born on the East Coast, raised in the West.  Kobie grew up wanting to play the saxophone.  As a child, new to the Los Angeles area, Kobie’s mom would take him to the Hollywood Bowl to enjoy live performances.  Kobie would play along on his toy saxophone in the aisle into the night garnering cheers from concert goers who also sat in the nosebleed section to enjoy the interactive experience sitting in this part of the venue would bring.

Fast forward, growing up in LA, Kobie enjoyed music from all over the city from Friday afternoon outdoor jazz concerts at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) to the downtown Central Avenue and Leimert Park Jazz Festivals. Kobie enrolled in the Southeast Symphony Conservatory, attended Hamilton High School, and played with the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center in the famous Leimert Park. He received private lessons from Ricky Washington and had the honor of knowing legends like Reggie Andrews who were responsible for mentoring popular jazz artists like Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin. There were many opportunities that Kobie found himself in by just being connected to the community that has given him so much, such as playing impromptu with the likes of Jason Moran at the Underground Museum, and in the John Coltrane, Gardenia and Panama Music Festivals.

In the spring of 2021,  Kobie decided to forgo his acceptance to the equivalent of USC’s pre law program to pursue his love for music at The New School in New York City.  While at the New School he became active and created an organization on campus called, Black Artists Unified, BAU, an organization open to all with the aim of forming a base that would allow students to work collectively, build community on campus and sometimes partner with students from neighboring institutions such as NYU. New York City would bring him closer to his goal of creating a project centered in genre bending music themes of purpose and self-discovery.

Kobie is now between the two coasts, living on campus at the New School and finishing up his senior year, with Brooklyn as his base. He released his first single “For The People”, —-, the second single, “No Breaks” featuring rapper Aman with a music video release on YouTube on his birthday, January 4th.  On January 19th, Kobie released his Ep “For The People” with an added ballad, “My Heart” and “Our Lives” which speaks to a commitment to music as a message of love and healing. The project meshes genres ranging from the roots of jazz, rap, r&b and funk. You’re guaranteed to be moved listening to his arrangements that have a message in the music.
